Haziq glad to be a source of inspiration

KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Haziq Samrat may be just 14 and a paraplegic who needs a skateboard to move about.

However, he stood tall among the others on stage when he received the Maulidur Rasul Award 2009 yesterday.

It was not sympathy that Mohd Haziq gained but awe from his fellow recipients and the audience as he wheeled himself on the skateboard and moved himself up the steps to receive his award from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I have to be strong and accept my condition with an open mind. People and my school mates treat me like anyone else,” said the student from SMK Bandar Tun Hussein Onn 2 in Kuala Lumpur.

“I am happy to be given this recognition. I am glad that I am a source of inspiration for others,” said Mohd Haziq, who was one of five Maulidur Rasul Award recipients.

The other recipients were 14-year-old Muhammad Ahmad Zahid, who could memorise the Quran when he was 10; Muslim Consumers Associa-tion secretary-general Datuk Dr Ma’amor Osman; Chinese-Muslim Association (Sarawak) president Mortadha Lau Abdullah; and Pengasih founder and president Mohd Yunus Pathi.

They received RM22,000, a certificate and a plaque each.
